Beware, though, that shallow water will not always produce breaking waves in calm seas. In fact, unless the water is very shallow you are unlikely to see breaking waves if they are under one metre high. Also, if you are viewing them from seaward, which is most likely, they might not be as clearly visible as they would be from the other direction. Breaking seas on rocks are likely to be much more localised but again, they won't always be clearly visible from seaward and if there’s a big sea running, they may be lost in the general breaking wave crests associated with the strong wind.
It is surprising how much of the detail is left out of the main route planning charts but which shows up on the large scale charts, so you need to look at the proposed route in the large scale to make sure it’s OK. When you are fully satisfied that the route is suitable you can start to look for possible options. Look for conspicuous objects along the coast that may help you to identify features and places. As detailed in 16: Conspicuous marks, they can also be used as a steering mark if there happens to be land ahead along your chosen route.
In a powerboat, this should give you a more comfortable ride. Secondly, as you head into the bay you will start to receive protection from the worst of the seas by the headland that lies on the other side. This means that when you have to turn along the coastline and head into the wind, you should find better sea conditions and get a better ride, allowing an increase in speed. Conditions should continue to improve as you approach the next headland, allowing a faster and smoother ride. By doing this, the trip around the bay should be quicker than the trip directly across, and you will get a more comfortable ride into the bargain.
